I have to catch everyone up!

Latest for The Week Magazine. The challenge was to make a visually boring idea more cover worthy. I tried to channel Jack Davis a little and give each person a little more personality.

Another one from The Week. A similar challenge with the crowd. This is my version. The final had some changes. The fellow in the front is very loosely based on my brother-in-law. I didn’t have a picture in front of me, or for anyone except the statue. The curious thing is after I stopped and the dust cleared the faces in the crowd started looking like famous people I’ve seen. Which makes sense I guess. Johnny Damon, John Goodman, David Koechner, to name a few. The rest are a stretch.

Cover for The Week. This took longer than I thought it would. I’m not a fan of drawing and painting architecture. I wish I had a few more days, but most of the deadlines for The Week tend to be 2 days or less. And I still have to fit grocery shopping in there!

The Week. I like this one.

Cover for The Week. Peace Prize winner. um, yeah.

Deadlines while re-locating.

I moved to Manhattan from Brooklyn last month. Still feeling like I was fresh out of college and grossly underestimating how much crap I had accumulated, it was a colossal pain in the arse. My friends came by and really helped out. In less than a month, I went to California twice. Opening at Copro Nason Gallery in LA where I had a piece in a group show. fharper.com for the type of work I show in galleries. (warning: it’s not work safe!) Spent a week in New York finishing the packing and doing a deadline. Then to San Diego for the Comic Con. Came back to NYC and finished moving what I couldn’t fit the previous week! Plus more deadlines. Not every piece I did fits what I focus on, but here is a few…

Cover for The Week Mag. Obama tries to bail out the sinking healthcare reform.

See, not what I usually do, but fun and challenging any way! Cover for The Week Mag.

For Crains NY. Joseph Sitt Coney Island real-estate developer. My opinion is it will never be as good as it was. The Mermaid Day Parade rocked!

Been channeling R. Crumb this afternoon to come up with a nice portrait for a special client. Had a great day walking around the SoHo and West Village area in Manhattan. Ended up at my gym on 14th St. and then “Cup of Joe” coffee shop before getting on the “L” train back to Bushwick. I wish I could freeze everyone in place for a few hours sometime so I could draw everyone I see. There were some great faces riding back to Brooklyn with me today!

A painting and a doodle.

Sometimes just cartooning is fun. I met a guy named Steve Silver at the National Caricature Network’s annual convention in Raliegh, NC last Nov. He does a lot of character development for animation. I sat in on his drawing seminar and got re-inspired to design characters and just plain draw more. I had fallen in to the habit of only drawing when I had a job. That just got me in a rut. I’ve been trying to pay attention to the gesture of my figures even in a more conservative composition. I’m even trying to get the gesture of a landscape or automobile.

This week’s Sports Illustrated Players article illustration.

This is a quick pencil doodle I dashed off after waking up late this morning after being up ’til 4:30am finishing my deadline for The Week Mag. This is actually my self image I have after most all-nighters…. I don’t know what is in the bottle. Coffee in  juice form?

If I’m not posting here, I’m busy!

For Sports Illustrated a while back. Not sure if I posted this yet. The latest SI pieces have been more away from likenesses and caricatures. This is mostly a cartoon, loosely based on the writer of the article who got to try out for the Denver Broncos while doing research.

I was thinking Bernie Fuches playing with the negative spaces and acid greens and brilliant blues.

I think I could have turned this in to a great composition if I had a little more time. I like it as it is enough though. Until 10AM Mon. this was the illo. they wanted. Fortunately I had already done most of the football image and only had another hour or so left  to do.

This was a few weeks ago. I love to mess with flattening out an image (like the white splotches here) and then rendering other parts more 3-D. This is a left-over from when I did comic books. One of my favorite artists was Bill Sienkiewicz. Because of him I discovered Baron Story. Their design sense just blows my mind! Fortunately I have a band-aid for that.

Sports Illustrated threw a curve at me this week. 2 illos. in one day…. and most of the night. I had to go in early for a cover meeting at The Week because of Labor Day, of course. Obviously SI and TW don’t talk with each other about my schedule! Such is the life of freelance. More often than not I can say yes to every job that calls. I try to watch for bottlenecks. I tend to drive on the highway like that as well, but every now and then you get stuck behind a dump truck with crap falling out. HA! Well, to be more accurate, a dump truck with money and espresso falling out of it.
