“Lead Poisoning” Opening July 10th

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

Sneak peak. Inspired by an oil disaster. Some times you just have to address the latest crime against ourselves and the ensuing stupidty. Just like there is a kiddie ride depicting the Titanic at street fairs, I think a month or two after the oil spill is resolved, the parts of the country not directly affected will completely forget how terrible this is. This is a pencil drawing done for a show curated by Jason D’aquino that will appear in a group show with a ton of brilliant, cream of the crop, best of the best, the “Fantastic” in 4, the “kick” in ass, the “awe” in some, artists!… um, I’ll just post  it here then. I don’t think I’ll be able to top those accolades. I also can’t believe I spelled “accolades” correctly!

“Come in the oil is fine”

Moving into Manhattan

Sketched in Moleskine while on the train. My good friend, Travis Louie, gave me the initial spark for this idea. I recently had the experience of sitting in on a lecture from Barron Storey at the Society of Illustrators. I’ve always dug his work and now I love his attitude too! I also had to do some quick gestures as he spoke.

I’m moving in to a new studio. I’m excited to see how it affects my work. More windows!

Here is the sketch for a painting I’m working on for the “Monsters” show at Copro Nason Gallery in July.

Hey! it’s summer. I should post a bit more, eh?

I had a perfect weekend. Thurs. Paul Booth worked on my arm tattoo. Friday, I signed out a BMW z8 convertible, drove to East Stroudsburg and stayed in a bed and breakfast with my girl, Molly, and um , there was something… something else. Oh yeah, I JUMPED OUT OF AN AIRPLANE AT 13,000 FUCKING FEET! I didn’t jump, it was more of a plummet. At the entrance to the airstrip, I saved a 4 inch snapping turtle that seemed to have been confused between what a pond felt like and the middle of a road. I put him back and proceeded to what I thought would be my eventual “bone shattering sort of falling into earth death” with the calm that I saved a little snapping turtle. It was the most amazing experience I ever had. I fell around 120 mph horizontally and then drove a stretch of road at 120 mph in a vertical direction! Sunday we drove over to visit Ron English and he showed us around his studio and home and neighborhood.

At the car club.

2 hours before testing gravity.

That would be me in the blue suit throwing up… out?

That’s the Delaware Water Gap.

One of 6 still-life studies with gouache on Bristol. My favorite coffee cup.

Because I’m a dummy.

I don’t do this promotion thing very well. I posted it to the right. I have a drawing in the “DRAW” show at Shooting Gallery in San Francisco this month. Last count, there were about 400 artists in it. I feel like a fish in a school, or a cog in the machine, or a “Where’s Waldo” thing. Where is Fred in this show? I think I’ll need a neon, talking, fire works shooting frame to bring any attention to my little pencil drawing. I did do some singling out in my own way by putting it in my “PREVIEWS” section. I guess you can present-view and after-view it also.

Just for kicks. I had the opportunity to see what a Lotus Elise can do. I went to the “Gunks” but it was too cold to rock climb.

Illustration assignments have been eating up my time!

20 minute pose with two models at the Society of Illustrators while a 2 piece jazz thing played. I drew one’s front on the other’s back/bottom.

Sketch done on the train a few pages over from the models above.

So Hot!

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Of course I’m kidding! I did this study a while ago. I started doodling on the train and I think I finished most of it at Verb coffee shop in Williamsburg in Brooklyn. It led to the painting called “The Politician” (or 2 Chickens in every pot) It’s hard to keep my titles straight sometimes because I think they evolve as much as the images. This is the 3rd pencil drawing in the “Delineations” show at Ad Hoc Gallery.

Some Things to come.

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Some pencil drawings I’ll be putting in a group show called “Delineations” curated by Andrew Michael Ford at Ad Hoc Gallery.

Running title so far is “Botoxic with Beads”. This is a little dark because I wanted the subtle line work to show up. It’s a delicate pencil drawing with a lot of subtle tones in it.

“”Elusive Moose”, pencil on off white paper. This is the story of a non-moose taking himself out for a stroll and wagging his non tail at aliens in the parking lot… Don’t ask, I’ve had a shot of Talisker and it’s almost 4AM as I write this.

Life drawing

I hung out with my friend Steve Ellis, a really great artist. We drew at Spring Street Studios in SoHo a week or 2 ago. The model was fantastic. These are just a few from the sketchpad that I pulled. I filled out my pad with this session… almost had to draw on napkins and paper towels. HA!

40 minute pose.

20 minutes.

Two 5 minutes.

More Previews added.

A sketch pad page. Ideas I came up with while on the subway…

A good August

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Where to start? August has been my adventuring month. Shooting reference. The curved pipe from nowhere.

Actually it comes out of the sidewalk, but my theory is it originates from a dimension unknown. It’s spews 5 dimensional garbage that we mistake for city soot that settles on every window sill in the city. I think the pipe makes a great hat.

This is one of several drawings I just put up in my Drawing section. I’ll probably be putting it in the Prime Surreal Estate show curated by Dylan Evans. The opening is in Jersey City Oct. 3rd.

I should have been arrested for driving this Porche Camen S limited edition. I’m still figuring out how to drive a stick shift. I only stalled a few times, but I think once is too many. I can’t really say anything about driving this car that would describe what it felt like. I’m used to automatics from Dollar rent a car and the like. This was NOTHING like any car I’ve ever driven. I don’t know if you can call this a car or call the other things cars. My parameters of what a car is have been expanded. Zero to 100 (I hear) in about 6 seconds!

After a day in New York's mechanical underbelly, I come home inspired to paint strange configurations of the body and the machine.
